The wealthy and very young aristocrat Alexandrine Tinne from The Hague decided in the second half of the 19th century to no longer sit on her money, but took her mother, aunt, hundreds of servants, carriers and camels on a journey to places where no single traveler, let alone a woman. O’Hanlon arrives in the Sudan ravaged by civil war. Here the journey of the Tinnes got a grim character.
Hundreds of bonded slaves on the banks of the Nile horrify the ladies. The Arab traders make their lives very difficult. Malaria and other illnesses take their toll. When they decide to go down the Gazelle River, a branch of the Nile, they fall into the hands of the infamous slave trader Bicelli. O’Hanlon finds the place where the ladies were stuck and where Alexine’s mother would eventually die. Alexandrine travels back to Cairo. Her once so proud expeditionary army disintegrates along the way. Dozens of servants will die on the way back.
After a few years of living as a hermit, Alexandrine undertakes another great expedition, this time to the Tuaregs. Although she is advised against on all sides, she leaves. On the way she is attacked and brutally murdered. Her body would never be recovered.
