Appalachian Trail Backpacking – “Triple Crown” (Virginia) – May 2018

For my 2nd trip of 2018 I headed back to the Appalachian Trail to hike the section in Virginia known as the “Triple Crown”. The Triple Crown is a 30-mile section of the trail that contains three of the better known landmarks on the entire AT – Dragon’s Tooth, McAfee Knob, and Tinker Cliffs. Bob and Travis both joined me on this trip, which made it especially enjoyable.

Staying with the ‘wet’ theme from my first trip of 2018, the Red River Gorge, there was unfortunately a large low pressure system parked offshore in the Atlantic Ocean which brought us multiple inches of rain during our hike. Worse than the rain though were the low clouds that prevented us from experiencing the spectacular views that the Triple Crown is known for.

But even without the views it was a great hike. We were able to experience the unique, magical feeling that you always get when hiking the Appalachian Trail, and, as always, the AT ‘social life’ was truly special.

For those who have watched my other videos this one is done in the same style – a little under an hour in length, intended to bring the audience along for the ride, and with a still picture slide show with music at the end. If you just have a few minutes just skip to the end and enjoy the pictures.

Hey David, long time subscriber here, thanks again for yet another great video! I liked the look of that weather app you were using on your phone – what was it? I'll have to get it for my next trip.

I enjoy all of your videos – and your sense of humor! You have a good time no matter the weather or conditions. That's what an adventure is all about.

  4. minustwelve says:

Its been raining off and on everyday up here in Virginia, our wet Spring weather. Glad to see another Video though!! And got the guys together! only one missing is Christian and the Dogs.

  8. ARO Online says:

It was awesome meeting you on the Low Gap trail! This was an awesome video! I am working with my scouts on planning a trip to the Triple Crown for next summer…but I'm not sure I can wait that long…lol. In regards to the rain, I purchased an Altura Professional Rain Cover to help protect my camera in the rain. The top is clear so you can still see the flip out screen (if you have one). It works pretty well, but still doesn't help out if the lens is fogging.

  9. purpur4 says:

In case no one told you about it, make sure to stop by the Homeplace restaurant if you ever do this hike again.
And as always, great video recap!

  10. Mark Cummings says:

  11. Ron Warren says:

Hey David good to see you again and really happy to see my hero BIG BOB. Great video you get better every time. Thanks for taking us along.

  12. Steve Baker says:

Hey, David! Great vid again! Capped it with a great picture there at the end too. Have you planned your Colorado trip yet? Keep an eye on the fire near Durango. It might not mess with your actual hike but it could cause some travel concerns depending on your itinerary. Take care, my friend. Can't wait to see your CO trip!

  13. Adam Holbrook says:

What are the odds?  I've been following your videos for years, and have replicated some of your hikes 9Roan highlands and soon Grayson highlands) .  I was on the same section the same weekend and missed you, LOL  We didn't want to be too close to Damascus that weekend, so we hiked this section instead of a few other options.  Thanks for the videos.  I always enjoy them.  That climb up to Tinker cliffs was no joke!  We enjoyed the same views from Dragon's tooth , LOL

  14. G0ingNative says:

Dragons tooth climb looked adventurous. Great video. Lots of rain, but you guys kept in good spirits. Well done. Thanks for sharing.

  15. joseph guevarra says:

David, you should thru-hike the AT. Thanks for sharing your vid.

  16. AppealingEnd says:

Wow! I wondered what it would be like if you got Travis and Bob together for a hike. Can’t wait to view this.

  17. All Things Out Doors says:

Great vid as always…how do u like the BeFree water filter? I love that thing!! Running out of water can zap ur energy on the trail…enjoyed the video thanks for sharing…by the way love the elk call bit hahaha!!!!! 😂😂

  18. Ethan Calk says:

David – as always, LOVE your videos – they are so much better than most because you comment what you're seeing and tell us about landmarks, interesting facts, etc. Most other backpack videos are just pans across the wilderness with wind noise or still pictures set to music. Keep up the good work!

Question – looks like you have some kind of clip mount for your video camera on your pack strap. Is this a special clip, or part of a tripod plate, or something similar? Looks very handy!

Can't wait for your Weminuche trip!

  19. Hiking with Braids says:

Go Bob what a fire!! I'm always impressed when people can get a fire going with wet wood. Great video as always David!

  20. WanderingFromKansas says:

Great stuff as always, David! I'm looking forward to doing this one someday, as well!

  21. Dragon Roams says:

Another great video. I never realized how tough the climb to dragons tooth is I will have to keep that in mind. Thanks for sharing.
