This was easily the prettiest of the waterfalls I hiked to last week. Yellow Creek Falls is located near Walhalla, SC in the Sumter National Forest. The trail to access the falls requires a three-mile round trip. I did encounter a lot of deadfall along the way, most of it having fallen the previous 24 hours. I had a horrible time getting through the first of the big trees blocking the trail and finally had to remove my pack and crawl through.
The forest on the trail is impressive. Not old growth, but very nice maturing second growth. I was very pleasantly surprised at the variety and health of this cove hardwood forest.
I didn’t encounter a lot of wildlife on the hike, but I did have a good time observing the things that I did notice. Specifically some insects, a Black rat snake, and a school of striped minnows below the falls.
